Surah Al-Ikhlas: Meaning, Virtues and Why It Equals a Third of the Quran
Surah Al-Ikhlas is the 112th chapter of the Quran. With just four short verses, it is often the first surah a child memorizes after Al-Fatihah, and it is recited by Muslims every day in prayer, in the morning and evening remembrances and before sleeping. Its name means "sincerity" or "purity", because it describes Allah in pure, absolute terms and frees belief from anything mixed with it.
Surah Al-Ikhlas in Arabic, transliteration and meaning
Verse 1
قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
Qul huwallāhu aḥad.
Meaning: Say: He is Allah, the One.
Verse 2
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ
Allāhuṣ-ṣamad.
Meaning: Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
Verse 3
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
Lam yalid wa lam yūlad.
Meaning: He neither begets nor is born.
Verse 4
وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
Wa lam yakun lahū kufuwan aḥad.
Meaning: And there is none comparable to Him.
What each verse teaches
"He is Allah, the One"
The word aḥad means one in an absolute, unique sense: one in His essence, with no parts, no partner and nothing like Him. This is the heart of tawheed, the oneness of Allah.
"Allah, the Eternal Refuge"
Aṣ-Ṣamad is a rich name that scholars explain as the One whom all creation turns to in every need, while He needs nothing at all. Every creature depends on Him; He depends on no one.
"He neither begets nor is born"
Allah has no children and no parents. He has no beginning and no end, and is not like created beings who are born, grow and pass away.
"There is none comparable to Him"
Nothing is equal to Allah or similar to Him in any way. This final verse closes the door to every comparison between the Creator and His creation.
Virtues of Surah Al-Ikhlas
- Equal to a third of the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, it is equal to a third of the Quran" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Scholars explain that the Quran's message covers belief in Allah, laws and stories, and this surah perfectly summarises the first of these.
- Loving it brings Allah's love. A Companion who led prayers used to finish his recitation with Al-Ikhlas in every rak'ah. When asked why, he said it describes the Most Merciful and he loved to recite it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Tell him that Allah loves him" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- Protection morning and evening. The Prophet ﷺ told a Companion to recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas three times in the morning and evening, saying it would suffice him against everything (Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi).
- Part of the bedtime Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ recited it with Al-Falaq and An-Nas into his cupped hands every night before sleeping (Sahih al-Bukhari). Our guide to Sunnahs of the Prophet ﷺ for children explains this routine.
When to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas
- In any rak'ah of prayer, after Al-Fatihah.
- In the two Sunnah rak'ahs before Fajr, where the Prophet ﷺ often recited Al-Kafirun in the first and Al-Ikhlas in the second (Sahih Muslim).
- Three times in the morning and evening, with Al-Falaq and An-Nas.
- Before sleeping.
Reciting it correctly
Because it is so short, Al-Ikhlas is easy to rush. A few points to watch:
- Qalqalah at the end of every verse. All four verses end in the letter د, which should "bounce" slightly when you stop on it: aḥad, ṣamad, yūlad, aḥad.
- The heavy ص in aṣ-ṣamad. It is a full, deep sound, not a light س.
- The ح in aḥad. It comes from the middle of the throat, not a light h.
- The long ū in yūlad is held for two counts, while the vowels in yalid are short.
For more on these sounds, see our guides to Tajweed rules for beginners and common recitation mistakes.
Teaching it to children
Most children can learn Al-Ikhlas in a few days: one verse a day, joined together as they go. Explaining the meaning in simple words, such as "Allah is One, everyone needs Him, He has no family like us, and nothing is like Him", helps them understand what they say in every prayer.
Memorize with a tutor
Al-Ikhlas is often one of the first surahs in our Quran Memorization course, where a tutor makes sure every letter is correct before it is memorized. Students who are still learning to read can start with Quran Reading with Tajweed.
