Benefits of Reciting the Quran Daily: Rewards from Authentic Hadith and How to Start
The Quran is the word of Allah, revealed as guidance for humanity. Reciting it is one of the most rewarding acts of worship a Muslim can do, and one that fits into any day: five minutes after Fajr, a page before bed, a surah on the way to work. This article brings together what the Quran and authentic hadith say about the benefits of regular recitation, followed by practical tips for building a daily habit.
1. Reward for every letter
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah receives a good deed, and each good deed is multiplied ten times. He clarified: "I do not say that Alif Lām Mīm is one letter; rather Alif is a letter, Lām is a letter and Mīm is a letter" (At-Tirmidhi). Even a few verses a day add up to an enormous reward.
2. The Quran will intercede for its companions
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Recite the Quran, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for its companions" (Sahih Muslim). A "companion" of the Quran is someone who keeps returning to it, not someone who reads it once.
3. Double reward for those who struggle
Many beginners feel embarrassed by how slowly they read. The Prophet ﷺ said that the one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble and righteous scribes (the angels), and the one who recites it with difficulty, stumbling over it, will have two rewards (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Struggling is not a reason to stop. It is a reason to keep going.
4. The best of people
"The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Learning to recite, then helping your children or others to recite, is among the most honoured things a Muslim can do.
5. Peace for the heart
Allah says: "Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" (Quran 13:28). The Quran is the greatest form of remembrance. Many people find that a short daily recitation brings calm and perspective to even the busiest day.
6. Guidance and healing
Allah describes the Quran as "guidance and healing for those who believe" (41:44), and says, "We send down in the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers" (17:82). Regular recitation keeps its guidance present in your mind, especially when you also read the meaning.
7. Tranquillity and mercy
The Prophet ﷺ said that whenever people gather in a house of Allah to recite and study the Book together, tranquillity descends upon them, mercy covers them, the angels surround them and Allah mentions them to those with Him (Sahih Muslim). Family recitation at home brings a share of that blessing too.
8. Better prayer
The more Quran you know and understand, the more meaningful your salah becomes. Daily reading also helps you memorize new surahs to recite in prayer, instead of repeating the same few every day.
How to build a daily recitation habit
- Start small. One page, or even five verses, every day is better than a whole juz once a month. The Prophet ﷺ said the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
- Attach it to a prayer. Recite straight after Fajr or Isha, when you are already in a state of worship.
- Keep a Mushaf where you sit. Seeing it is the reminder.
- Track your progress. A bookmark or a simple chart keeps you motivated.
- Read the meaning too. Add a translation of the verses you recited. Understanding deepens the connection.
- Recite with correct Tajweed. Reward comes with effort, and correct recitation is part of respecting the Quran. A teacher helps you fix mistakes before they become habits.
